January 1st Cycle Discussion

January 2025 1st Edition

It’s the start of a new year and were looking for epic things to do to help our community. But the clock is ticking, we don’t have that much more time to decide. Stay tuned to see what we’re cooking up…

Welcome back. I’m Dounia and this is the Metropolitan Global.
We vote twice a month, the first cycle deciding what to focus on and the second cycle deciding how we spend our common fund towards that goal.
This month there have been a few ideas sponsored as to what we could do to help our communities. Some of these are:
1)       There are two recovery centers in Oxford County. The Larry Labonte Recovery Center in Rumford or WMARI in Norway. We can reach out to them and see if ther’s a way we can help.
2)       Food Pantry’s and Community Suppers: Many churches run food pantry’s for the community and have suppers where everyone can enjoy a meal together. We could focus on finding these and assisting how we can.
3)       Maine Adaptive: Maine Adaptive is a Non-Profit that coordinates and trains volunteers to do fun activities with individual’s suffering from disabilities. Not only would we be helping out our neighbors, but we might even have a little fun in the process.
4)       Neighborhood Watches: There is rampant crime in Lewiston and Portland. There is a community watch organization called Guardian Angels that we can partner with. The idea is for a large group to patrol high crime areas and deter crime while helping people in need.
5)       Baking for First Responders: To show our appreciation for the people who put their lives on the line for us everyday, we propose baking delicious treats and passing them out to the different stations in the county.
6)       There is a lot of child trafficking happening in Maine. An idea was sponsored to start trying to take actions to stop it.

So we have a few ideas to work with. Some of these are a lot more approachable than others.
For example, baking delicious cookies for some fireman is much easier than volunteering at a soup kitchen or food pantry. And volunteering is much easier that trying to tackle crime in our cities or child trafficking across the state.
We understand that we wont be able to solve these problems yet, but it’s important to think big, but act small, and no small act of kindness is a wasted effort.
So what do you think we should do? Form a neighborhood watch and patrol the streets like Batman, make our fire and policemen fat through delicious, sweet treats? Ski down a hill with some beautiful souls with slight life challenges or go cook at a soup kitchen? The only option off the table is doing nothing. When we do nothing, nothing changes.
Thanks for tuning in, and we hope you’ll consider joining our Citizen’s Jury at www.metropolitanglobal.com to decide what to do next. Thanks for tuning in, and we’ll see you next cycle.
